The curatedFoodMetagenomicData (cFMD) is an open-access database that comprehends curated metadata, taxonomic profiles, as well as reconstructed genomes from food (shotgun) metagenomes, designed to advance the use of metagenomics in food science. The first version of cFMD consists in a total of 2,533 metagenomes associated with 59 datasets: 45 datasets and 583 samples are coming from publicly available studies, and the remaining 14 datasets and 1,950 samples are produced within the EU H2020 MASTER project. The resource provides standardized metadata and features 10,112 prokaryotic and 787 eukaryotic metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs), grouped into 1,036 prokaryotic and 108 eukaryotic species clusters. furthermore, 320 of these clusters represent previously uncharacterized species. By integrating these MAGs into sensitive taxonomic profiling pipelines, cFMD facilitates detailed analyses of microbial overlaps between food and human microbiomes, offering species- and strain-level insights across diverse populations.
